BOCA MINA es un ensayo visual y narrativo desde el corazón de La Rinconada, el pueblo más alto del mundo y el epicentro de una fiebre del oro marcada por la devoción, el sacrificio y el mito. En este paisaje etéreo del altiplano peruano, a más de 5,400 metros de altitud, una montaña sagrada se convierte en una mina y miles de hombres buscan el oro en un laberinto de socavones, guiados por poco más que la esperanza de una vida mejor.
Las bocaminas, o las entradas a los socavones, abren la puerta a un tiempo detenido, donde nunca se termina el sacrificio por conseguir el metal deseado. Los mineros soportan arduas condiciones de trabajo, regidas por un sistema laboral informal y desigual, donde el esfuerzo diario no garantiza recompensa. En Bocamina, Garro explora en aquello que impulsa la búsqueda del oro en un territorio inhóspito y bajo condiciones extremas de peligro, y como respuesta ofrece un retrato particular de un pueblo minero. Las bocaminas, concebidas como artefactos de los sueños colectivos de quienes las excavaron, encarnan tanto la promesa como la crudeza del poder transformador del oro. A través del lente de Garro, las bocaminas hablan. Aquí, el oro es esperanza y condena a la vez; y en sus profundidades, el Muki —espíritu temido de la mina— aguarda en las sombras, evocando un dicho en La Rinconada: «Dentro del oro, el diablo acecha».

In this ethereal landscape of the Peruvian altiplano, at an altitude of over 5,400 meters, a sacred mountain becomes a mine, and thousands of men search for gold in a labyrinth of underground tunnels, guided by little more than the hope of a better life.
The bocaminas, or entrances to the mine shafts, open the door to a suspended time, where the sacrifice to obtain the desired metal never ends. The miners endure harsh working conditions, governed by an informal and unequal system, where daily effort does not guarantee reward. Garro explores what drives the search for gold in such inhospitable terrain and in such dangerous conditions, offering a fascinating portrait of a mining town in response. The bocaminas, as artifacts of the collective dreams of the miners who built them, represent both the promise and the reality of gold’s transformative power. Through Garro’s lens, the bocaminas— literally the mouths of the mine– speak. Here, gold is both hope and punishment; and in their depths, the Muki —the mine’s feared spirit— waits in the shadows, evoking a saying in La Rinconada: «Inside of gold, the devil lurks.»
